Reseña / Review:

“Black E.T.” es el homenaje sonoro del film estadounidense de ciencia-ficción “The Brother From Another Planet”, dirigida por John Sayles y creada en 1984, la cual ya es una película de culto.

En este trabajo Maquinistas condensó y contemporizó el soundtrack original e incorporó diálogos desde algunas de sus escenas claves. El álbum consta de 12 tracks cortos, algunos de ellos de menos de un minuto de duración, el cual mantiene un sentido de soundtrack y claramente se escucha mejor reproduciéndolo de principio a fin. La música refleja la solidaridad y empatía mostrada a través de la temática de la película, el “hermano extraterrestre” que se encuentra fuera de lugar en el barrio de Harlem (Nueva York). Se percibe una clara y enfocada militancia en los prolíficos productores Cinturón Negro & Polar, quienes son maestros en el arte del samplear y editar con una misteriosa habilidad para loopear sonidos ambientales y atmosféricos para exponer su musicalidad, sin temor a sobrepasar los límites del Hip Hop instrumental hacia una nueva interpretación de “musica concreta”, esto queda sin duda mejor demostrado cuando deforman espacialmente el track “Language Code”, el cual se abre camino hacia el peso rítmico de “Sex Between Interspecies”, donde el sonido percusivo de los tambores metálicos Steel Pan que se escuchan aquí (extraídos del track principal de la película), es retomado también en el monstruoso ritmo dub del tema que abre el disco “The Arrival”. El retorcido sincopado fuera de red del track “Everybody Needs Tools” reitera las credenciales y capacidades en el Hip Hop de Maquinistas. Este lanzamiento es un disco convincente y compacto para los seguidores del estilo Leftfield y del sonido que tiene habilidad creativa de ilustrar narrativas.

“Black E.T.” is a sonic homage to the 1984 American sci-fi film “The Brother From Another Planet”, directed by John Sayles and now a cult classic.

Maquinistas have condensed and contemporised the original score and incorporated dialogue from key scenes. The album, comprised of 12 short tracks, some less than a minute long, retains the feeling of a sound track and is best listened to in its entirety. The music reflects the solidarity and empathy shown towards the film’s subject, the Alien Brother who has found himself dislocated in Harlem. At the same time, there is a focussed militancy. Prolific producers Cinturón Negro and Polar are the masters of sampling and editing with an uncanny ability to loop ambient and atmospheric sound to expose its musicality. They fearlessly push the outer limits of instrumental Hip Hop towards a fresh interpretation of “music concrète”. This is best demonstrated when the space-warped abstraction of “Language Code” gives way to the rhythmic weight of “Sex Between Interspecies”. The steel pan motif heard here, lifted from the film’s original theme, is shared with the monster dub groove of the opening track “The Arrival”. The twisted, off-grid syncopation of “Everybody Needs Tools” reiterates Maquinistas Hip Hop credentials. This is a compact and compelling release for lovers of leftfield rhythm and sound and its ability to illustrate narratives.

“Maquinistas”, el dúo conformado por Polar y Cinturón Negro, continúa con su saga de sampleadelia futurista y esta vez se ha inspirado en el filme norteamericano de John Sayles “The brother from another planet” de 1984. Un homenaje de inspiración dub/afrofuturista.

“Black E.T.” es el tercer trabajo de “Maquinistas” y se basa exclusivamente en el sampling de los sonidos incidentales (background sound) del mismo filme, dando por resultado un collage de sonidos de 8 bit que emanan de antiguos juegos de gabinetes Arcade. “Black E.T.” fue concebido en tiempos de pre y pandemia intercambiando archivos digitales vía internet, siendo finalmente terminado el 2022.

“Maquinistas”, the duo formed by Polar and Cinturón Negro, continues with its saga of futuristic sampleadelia and this time it has been inspired by the 1984 American film by John Sayles “The brother from another planet”. A dub/afrofuturist-inspired tribute .

“Black E.T.” is the third work of “Maquinistas” and is based exclusively on the sampling of the background sound of the same film, resulting in a collage of 8-bit sounds that emanate from old arcade cabinet games. “Black E.T.” was conceived in times of pre and pandemic exchanging of digital files via the internet, finally being completed in 2022.
