[BIO] Ethernet Orchestra [Mundial / Worldwide]
Ethernet Orchestra is an Internet-based musical ensemble that explores intercultural improvisation through musical performances on the web. It features internationally acclaimed improvisers including guitarist Chris Vine, best known for his work with Elliott Sharp, Bobby Previte, and Bob Boilen in the downtown music scenes of New York and Washington D.C. Trumpeter Roger Mills, who came to prominence during the 1990s for his work with the Bristol-based free-jazz ensemble Space Ways, and trip-hop collective Statik Sound System (Cup of Tea Records), as well as Grantby (MoWax). The ensemble also includes renown Moorin Khuur player and throat singer Bukhchuluun Ganburged, UK saxophonist Hervé Perez, and the late Richard Lainhart, who worked and performed with John Cage, David Tudor, Steve Reich, Phill Niblock, David Berhman and Rhys Chatham.
Founded by trumpeter Roger Mills, the group also features musicians from a diverse range of cultures and musical traditions. It combines traditional and electronic instruments, including tabla, Persian tanbur & tar, and shakuhachi blended with Buchla synthesizer, voice, guitar, trumpet, sax and electronics. The ensemble also uses the network as an instrument, manipulating latency and compression as a process for shaping sound.
In March 2020, Ethernet Orchestra release their second album, Oceans between Sound with Pueblo Nuevo. Oceans between Sound is a selection of live, networked improvisations recorded during located venue performances or online jam sessions between 2014-2019. These freely improvised pieces are inspired by the ebb and flow of network data as a metaphor for the world’s oceans separating the members of the ensemble and their geographically displaced lives.
Members of the orchestra performed live from Sydney (Australia), Tehran (Iran), Londrina (Brazil), Sheffield (UK), Speyer (Germany) and Montreal (Canada).

The ensembles’ concerts take place in located venues and networked performance contexts, as well as freely improvised online jam sessions. Performances include; conferences and festivals, such as NIME2010, Sydney, DRHA, Ningbo, China, ZeroSpace Conference on Distance and Interaction, University of Virginia, USA, UpStage Festival of Cyberformance (2012), and our homage to Wassily Kandinsky at the University of Applied Sciences, Kaiserlautern, Germany (2019). Ethernet Orchestra is currently working on a new project performance at the Data Arena, University of Technology Sydney (2020).
The ensemble also acts as a sandpit for experimentation and new interdisciplinary collaborations. Many of these projects have inspired research by Roger Mills. His 2019 book, Tele-Improvisation: Intercultural Interaction in the Online Global Music Jam Session, emerged directly from ideas and practices developed by the ensemble. Ethernet Orchestra would like to remember our late friend and collaborator, Richard Lainhart. He contributed enormously to the ensemble’s musical sound and concepts, and he is sadly missed. His performances on our new album Oceans between Sound (pn150, 2020) and Diaspora (pn094, 2014) ensure his presence continues to live on in our music.
