José Miguel Candela nació en Santiago de Chile en 1968. Es Licenciado en Música de la Universidad de Chile, Magister en Artes con Mención en Música en la Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, Doctor en Artes con Mención en Música en la misma Universidad. Estudió en diversos cursos de composición y análisis con el maestro Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt, a quien considera su formador. Tiene una experiencia de docencia universitaria de más de 25 años (Universidad de Chile, UDLA, Universidad ARCIS, Universidad VIPRO).

Como compositor ha realizado obras para cine, teatro, y muy especialmente para danza contemporánea, superando la treintena de obras musicalizadas sólo en está última área. También se ha destacado en el área de la música electroacústica, superando también la treintena de obras entre acusmáticas y mixtas.

En 2000 es premiado con la beca Fundación Andes para componer su proyecto “Cuatro movimientos sinfónicos de carácter indigenista”, de los cuales uno, “Machaq Mara (dedicado a la cultura aymara)”, es seleccionado y estrenado en el año 2002 por la Orquesta Sinfónica de Chile. En 2003, gracias a la beca UNESCO- ASCHBERG, realizó una residencia en el Virginia Center for Creative Arts (EE.UU.). En 2007, gracias a una beca otorgada por el Ministerio de Cultura Español, realiza una residencia en el LIEM – CDMC (Madrid, España). En 2013 gana la beca IBERMUSICAS, con la que realiza una residencia creativa durante febrero y marzo de 2014 en el Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras CMMAS, Morelia, México. En esta residencia compone Stretto Leporello / Hikuri Neirra – a Rodrigo Sigal.

Ha editado hasta la fecha 9 discos. De ellos, 5 son de electroacústica: “TTK – 81 micropiezas para saxofón y electroacústica” con Miguel Villafruela (2008), “Ciclo Electroacústico Salvador Allende Gossens” (2009), “4 Piezas Acusmáticas por los Derechos Humanos” (2016), “Dos mil veinte” (2020) y “Ciclo Electroacústico Panegírico” (2021). En 2020 inaugura su “Colección Grandes Éxitos Bailables”, que recopila su trabajo para danza contemporánea. De esta colección son sus discos “Chacabuco” (2021), “Hombres en Círculo Durante el hechizo del Tiempo” (2021) y “Magnificar” (2021 [2009]). Además, ha publicado el disco de ambient “Rezos” (2020). Su música se ha tocado en Chile y en diversas partes de América y Europa, y ha sido editada en varios discos compilatorios tanto en Chile como en el extranjero.

Participó por 13 años en el grupo de rock experimental “Cangrejo”, banda que fundó junto a otros músicos en 1992, y por 5 años del grupo de rock-protesta “Desde Otro Siglo”, banda que fundara el 2010.

Fue coordinador de la Comunidad Electroacústica de Chile, organización que fundara junto a otros compositores en el año 2002. Fue fundador y organizador durante 6 años del Festival Internacional de Música Electroacústica de Santiago de Chile, “Ai-Maako”.

En el año 2012 funda, junto a Georgia del Campo, el proyecto SiniestraDanza (siniestradanza.cl), con un perfil de investigación/creación transdisciplinar (música-danza). Actualmente, se desempeña como académico en el Departamento de Danza de la Universidad de Chile.

José Miguel Candela was born in Santiago de Chile in 1968. He is  Graduated in music from the University of Chile, Master, and Dr. of Arts and Music from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He studied in various composition and analysis courses with Gustavo Becerra-Schmidt, whom he considers his formator. He has a university teaching experience of more than 25 years (University of Chile, UDLA, ARCIS University, VIPRO University).

Candela has composed works for cinema, theater, and especially for contemporary dance, with more than thirty musical creations only in this last area. He has excelled in electroacoustic music, with more than thirty works between acousmatic and mixed media, editing and showing numerously in Chile and beyond.

In 2000 he was awarded Fundación Andes scholarship to compose his project “Four indigenous character symphonic movements”, of which one, “Machaq Mara (dedicated to the Aymara culture)”, was selected and premiered in 2002 by the Symphonic Orchestra of Chile. In 2003, thanks to the UNESCO-ASCHBERG grant, he completed a residency at the Virginia Center for Creative Arts (USA). In 2007, thanks to a Spanish Ministry of Culture scholarship, Candela carried out a residency at the LIEM – CDMC (Madrid, Spain). In 2013 he won the IBERMUSICAS scholarship. He carried out a creative residency during February and March 2014 at the Centro Mexicano para la Música y las Artes Sonoras CMMAS, Morelia, México. In this residence he composes “Stretto Leporello / Hikuri Neirra – a Rodrigo Sigal“.

He has released 9 albums to date. Of these, 5 are electroacoustic: “TTK – 81 micropiezas para saxofón y electroacústica” (“TTK – 81 micro-pieces for saxophone and electroacoustics”) with Miguel Villafruela (2008), “Ciclo Electroacústico Salvador Allende Gossens” (“Salvador Allende Gossens Electroacoustic Cycle”) (2009), “4 Piezas Acusmáticas por los Derechos Humanos” (“4 Acousmatic Pieces for Human Rights”) (2016), “Dos mil veinte” (“Two thousand and twenty”) (2020) and “Ciclo Electroacústico Panegírico” (2021). In 2020 he inaugurated his “Great Dance Success Collection“, which compiles his work for contemporary dance. From this collection are his albums “Chacabuco” (2021), “Hombres en Círculo Durante el hechizo del Tiempo” (“Men in a Circle During the Spell of Time”) (2021) and “Magnificar“ (“Magnify“) (2021 [2009]). In addition, he has released the ambient album “Rezos” (2020). His music has been played in Chile and various parts of America and Europe, and has been released on multiple compilation discs in Chile and abroad.

He participated for 13 years in the experimental rock group “Cangrejo”, a band that he founded with other musicians in 1992. Later, for five years, he performed on the rock-protest group “Desde Otro Siglo,» a band that he founded in 2010.

Between 2000 and 2006, he founded and directed, with other Chilean composers, the Electroacoustic Community of Chile (CECh) and the International Electroacoustic Music Festival of Chile, “Ai-Maako”.

In 2012 he founded, together with Georgia del Campo, the SiniestraDanza project (siniestradanza.cl), with a transdisciplinary research/creation profile (music-dance). He is currently Professor at the Dance Department of the University of Chile.
