During his secondary education, after being exposed to a massive amount of popular electronic music and having started a techno-industrial band project, Alejandro Albornoz (aka Mankacen aka co(n)de Zero), discovered Electroacoustic Music for the very first time in 1987, thanks to the record collection of the Goethe Institute in Santiago de Chile, where he was able to access vinyl records and listen to the music of Karlheinz Stockhausen and the Chilean pioneers José Vicente Asuar and Juan Amenábar. Although this experience affected him deeply, until 2004 he approached this music solely as a listener, having dedicated himself instead to visual arts and non academic electronic music for several years.

In the decade of the 2000’s, he came in contact with the recently created Chilean Electroacoustic Community (CECh), a composers’ association which he joined in 2005. Participating in different roles, he distinguished his work as producer of several editions of the Ai-maako International Electroacoustic Music Festival. Being relevant to his training, he also studied in various courses, workshops and seminars with Federico Schumacher, Rodrigo Sigal and Rodrigo Cádiz.

His music has been performed in several prestigious festivals like Synthèse (Bourges, France), JIEM (Madrid, España), Bienal Internacional de Música Eletroacústica (São Paulo, Brasil), Sonoimágenes (Buenos Aires, Argentina), Ai-maako (Santiago, Chile), Électrochoc (Montreal & Quebec, Canada), Sound Junction (Sheffield, UK) y SIME (Lille, France).

Usually he composes for theatre, dance and video. In addition to producing concerts, he has been an organizer and curator of collections of Chilean Electroacoustic Music, workshops, lectures, meetings and other publications.

With studies in Fine Arts pedagogy (UMCE, Chile) and a Bachelor’s degree in Visual Arts (Universidad Mayor, Chile), he has a PhD in Electroacoustic Music Composition from the University of Sheffield, United Kingdom. The central topics of his research are human voice, poetry, language, acousmatic and algorithms.
